Astrid Hamker
President, Economic Council of the CDU e.V.

„As a rich country in Europe, Germany has so far been able to cope with the corona crisis better than other countries. As with Corona itself, those who were previously sick were much more affected in the crisis, emphasizes Astrid Hamker. “That is why there is no reason for me not to return as soon as possible to our successful model of the social market economy and solid state finances.”

Instead of a stringent nationwide strategy, the federal states are impended with outbidding each other. A second lockdown or even border closings like in spring will be very difficult for Germany to afford, even if it happens only partially. Is there instead a lack of consistency in implementing the existing protective measures? Shouldn’t, instead of unsettling the economy, violations of distance rules, mask requirements and quarantine requirements be applied more severely and more consistently?

Crisis management is still primarily about protecting health and the common good. But it is already clear that the legacy of fighting pandemics will lie in higher mountains of debt, inflated central bank balance sheets and more government intervention. It’s therefore also a question of long term preservation of our economic order. How do we deal with that?
